Truck Driving Safety – A Road Best Traveled
The life of a truck driver can be an exciting one. It is a life that can be highlighted with numerous stories of places traveled and people that were met. There is always a new story to tell about life on the road, but in reality, there is a lot more to the life than just the joys of travel. Driving a truck is a serious responsibility and the driver must realize the power that is in his or her control. In reality, truck driving safety is the most important aspect of the job. Unfortunately, it is often the most overlooked part of the job too.
The long hours that are required to compete as a truck driver are part of the life and can be a huge truck driving safety issue. The result of these long hours driving is obviously fatigue, and trying to push through this fatigue can be a huge mistake. A fatigued driver can actually be more dangerous than a drunk driver. It is the driver’s responsibility to take the necessary breaks and to stop completely if fatigue begins to set in.
An additional truck driving safety issue is the blind spots or “no zones” that are created by the length of the trailer. These blind spots can make it very difficult to change lanes safely; as a result, truckers should keep lane changes to a minimum and use visual signaling at all times when maneuvering.
Weather can be another major factor in truck driving safety. Rain and snow can increase stopping distances and can limit a driver’s ability to see the road properly. The best thing that can be done in poor weather driving conditions is slow down and pay attention to the road and other drivers. In snowy and ice conditions, it is also important to remember that bridges often freeze before the roads.
As a trucker, truck driving safety is an essential part of the job, and it must be treated with importance. Often, as drivers gain experience they become complacent with safety. This is not a job that one can become complacent at; lives can be taken very easily when these vehicles are not respected for their sheer power.
